Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups salted butter room temperature
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-4 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Using your electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and shortening on medium-high speed until smooth, about one minute.
  2. Add 4 cups of powdered sugar and mix on low speed until combined. Add another 4 cups and mix on low speed until mixture comes together in a clump.
  3. Add vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of hot water. Mix on low to medium speed until smooth, for about one minute, then check the consistency. If it is too thin, add more powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time. If it is too thick, add more water 1 teaspoon at a time. You can also add flavorings, coloring, or any other add-in at this point.
  4. Beat on low to medium speed for about 10 minutes, or until your buttercream is light and fluffy.

Recipe Notes

This buttercream can be refrigerated for up to 1 week in an airtight container. Before using, bring it to room temperature and beat on low to medium speed it for a few minutes. This buttercream will last for up to 3 days at room temperature when on a frosted cake and covered.
